How to Delete Labels in Gmail (2026 Guide)

Old Gmail labels pile up in the sidebar and hide the ones you use. You can delete a label in a few clicks. And here is the part that worries most people: deleting a label never deletes your emails. Does deleting a label delete the emails?

Your emails are safe. A label is a tag, not a folder. Deleting a label deletes the tag, not the messages. The messages stay in All Mail, exactly where they were.

This is the difference that matters. In many email apps, a folder holds the only copy of a message, so deleting the folder deletes the mail. Gmail does not work that way. A Gmail label is a sticker on a message. Peel off the sticker and the message remains.
